Ph.D. in speciality Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence. Department of Computing Science, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. April 2000.

Active participant of Canadian Conferences on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computer and Robot Vision (CRV) since 1996, including being program committee member (2000-2012), CRV program chair (2002).

Recipient of Young Investigator Award from the Canadian Image Processing and Pattern Recognition Society, Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award from the National Research Council of Canada, Best Presentation Award at the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN) - for the work on "Desaturation of Fully Connected Neural Networks" .

Other contributions to science and technology include:
- Open Source Associative Neural Network Library - in partnership with Ukrainian Cybernetics Centre
- Nouse (nose as mouse) video recognition system for users with disabilities - in partnership with Bruyère Continuing Care and University of Ottawa: www.nouse.ca
- Design and evaluation of automated lie detection systems - in partnership with University of Arizona and San Diego State University
