Dr. Yoshua Bengio

Dr. Yoshua Bengio is Full Professor of University of Montreal, Canada Research Chair Tier I in Statistical Learning Algorithms and the founding Director of Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA).  He obtained Ph.D. in Computer Science from McGill in 1991. 

Yoshua Bengio is a founder of Deep Learning, a revolutionary branch of Artificial Intelligence.   His work has 99,400 citations (Feb 22, 2018).  In service to AI community, Prof. Bengio is Senior Fellow and Co-Director of Learning in Machines and Brain at Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), an action editor of Journal of Machine Learning Research, associate editor of Neural Computation, and editor of the Foundations and Trends in Machine Learning. He was a Program Chair of NIPS 2008 and then General Chair of NIPS 2009.  He was filmed for Passion Science by Radio-Canada, interviewed by TVO's The Agenda with Steve Paikin, and presents at IBM Research presents on YouTube.               

Prof. Bengio actively supervises training of highly qualified personnel, including graduate students and Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDF).  Among those who already graduated, no less than eleven (11) became professors in Canada, US and through the world.  Yoshua Bengio was the first Canadian researcher awarded simultaneously with Canada Research Chair and NSERC Industrial Chair. He is a recipient of the 2009 Urgel Archambault Prize for excellence in research in AI.   In 2017, Prof. Bengio has been made Officer of the Order of Canada and received the Marie-Victorin Quebec Prize. He is a member of the Royal Society of Canada.    In 2018, Prof. Bengio was awarded with CAIAC Life Time Achievement Award  and became Fellow  of CAIAC.
